Mel D. Cole, a native of Syracuse, NY, and self-proclaimed Bills fan, has turned his unique and remarkable access to music industry insiders into a powerhouse of a photography career, building an incredibly impressive portfolio of portraits, editorial, and travel photography in the process. The self-taught high school dropout points to his work as hip-hop mogul P. Diddy’s private event photographer as the big break which opened up doors and opportunities, allowing him to build his own brand in the Tri-State area. What inspired you to get into photography in the first place?
Music!
What are you currently working on?
Currently I am working on this incredible project called: MAKE MONEY! Besides that, I have been working on a small exhibition I’m having at the new Brooklyn location for Coat of Arms. The date for that is May 14th.
What does your average work day look like?
Wake up around 11am, check emails, surf the net, brainstorming sessions with myself, edit photos, hit the gym, go to work…shot shot, shot. And do it all over again.
What’s the best thing about living and working in NJ/NY/Tri-State Area?
The best thing about living around here is paying rent! I fucking love it! But in all seriousness, the best thing about living here is knowing that around every corner is a adventure. There’s so much going on in this city not to mention the area. I think NYC is the best city in the world but the rent is too damn high though!
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grow up?
Two words: BRUCE SMITH! #78 BUFFALO BILLS! NFL ALL TIME SACK LEADER! THAT WHO!
What are you reading at the moment?
I recently finished reading Questlove’s latest book. It was pretty damn good!
What’s your favorite post-work destination?
Epstein’s on a tuesday for 2-1 drinks and the TheGoodlife! Family dinner & domino night.
