Jan 24, 2011 There’s no “i(Phone)” in “adventure”
“Every time I turned on my phone, I would get this message: International data rate of $19.97/MB applies… And I would immediately turn my phone back to airplane mode.”
Nina X at the digital agency Proximity Chicago is just returned from a three-week trip to Asia, where she winged it without the aid of her iPhone. For tech heads (like herself!) the precedence of frugality over security may seem extreme, but in the service of the trip severing the web’s tethers turned out to be a very smart move:
“…we let fate take us to where we were going and what we were doing. We tried random restaurants and let ourselves decide if it was good or bad… I stopped thinking in Facebook status updates. I decided to buy a camera and I bought a camera. I didn’t spend weeks paralyzed with indecision [about which model to buy]… And most importantly, I have no idea about what happened to Lindsay Lohan in rehab while I was gone.”
You can read about her experience here. It’s definitely worth the time if you’ve ever wondered (or still marvel at) how we once lived and traveled without a safety Net.
Disclaimer: I replaced Nina X at her radio producer job when she moved (on up) to MTV Asia and very much miss the days of no voicemail.
