Sleep Deprivation is Killing Your Career

Sleep Deprivation is Killing Your Career

Sleep. We all know we need it but most of us rarely concede to it. We either have never-ending errands, a project deadline, are traveling all over the globe, have kids to care for, or just straight up waste our time by watching two full seasons of House of Cards in a sitting. Thanks, Netflix. Take it from an elite level procrastinator and semi-insomniac – sleep deprivation is a serious threat. So much of a threat that according to a study done by the Harvard Medical School, “the negative effects of sleep deprivation are so great that people who are drunk outperform those lacking sleep.” That is beyond comprehension when you begin to flashback to all of those nights when you had more than just a few beers.

So, here are a few golden tips to help you fix those terrible, terrible habits that will benefit you in the long run.

1) Stay away from sleeping pills
2) Stop drinking caffeine (at least after lunch)
3) Avoid blue light at night (ahem, any device with a screen)
4) Wake up at the same time everyday
5) No binge sleeping on the weekend
6) Learn how much sleep you really need
7) Stop working
8) Eliminate interruptions
9) Learn to meditate
10) When all else fails: take naps
