May 25, 2012 Goodbye Plastic
This week, Los Angeles became the largest city in the US to ban plastic bags at shops and businesses. The Council voted 13-1 to remove plastic bags from 75,000 businesses over the next year, according to the LA Times. The move is designed to encourage shoppers to bring their own bags. Otherwise, you’ll have to purchase a paper bag for 10 cents. This raises an obvious debate about the environmental impact of paper bags, but almost everyone (except, perhaps, the manufacturers of plastic bags) can agree that getting rid of plastic is a good step. California is setting the curve on this trend, with San Jose, San Francisco, and our lovely home city of Long Beach, all having passed similar legislation.
