Destroying an Icon

Destroying an Icon

So it may not be an icon that’s been around for eternity, but the MetroCard, whether you’re a tourist or a straphanger, is intertwined into our daily lives in New York. You know, it’s that orange-ie yellow card with blue text. You can get a t-shirt with it printed across the entire body. I can probably draw one from memory right now.

*Please note I made an educated guess on what type of ad may end up on a MetroCard based on the ads that the Taxi and Limousine Commission allow.

Well, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York announced that they would begin selling ad space on the entire front of the card; erasing the existence of our iconic graphic that was the MetroCard. Chip Kidd has created a few ads that might suit the card’s “ad” future.
