Sep 03, 2012 8 Questions with: Brian Wong
We were lucky enough to be introduced to Brian Wong about six months ago through one of our sister agencies, Pivot Marketing Group. Brian is a 22 year old professional race car driver who has competed in quite a few races across the world and has also placed in the top five in several of those events. Now, aside from the obvious fact that he is only 22 years old and already racing professionally (a major feat in itself), what makes Brian so unique is that he is the FIRST Chinese-American to race professionally in all of the major worldwide racing series, including Nascar, American Le Mans Series, and Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.
Most people typically wouldn’t associate the Asian community with professional automotive racing — “professional” being the operative word here — so imagine my surprise when I first heard about Brian. Not only does this type of path help break down the Asian stereotype, but it will also help the racing world increase their reach to the Asian demographic, which I’m sure they would love to get their hands on.
Anyhow, enjoy the read and be sure to check out the last video as Brian runs through all of the mechanics of his race car. Thanks again, Brian, and best of luck to you — I’ll be looking out for your name on ESPN!
What are you working on?
This year, I’m pursuing two paths simultaneously: racing and finishing my degree in Communications at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. We are also getting up-and-running for the upcoming 2013 NASCAR and the Grand Am Sports Car Series.
Where do you find inspiration?
Having now traveled and raced in Europe, Canada, America, and China, I’ve always found inspiration and appreciation in traveling around the world while being able to pursue my passion.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grow up?
Race Car Driver! I have a picture of myself riding an off-road quad when I was 6-months-old.
What are you reading at the moment?
I read more magazines than books. Whenever I travel, I’m usually engrossed in an automotive or motor sport magazine.
How would you describe your job?
Interesting enough, I’ve never seen it as a job. I was very fortunate to be able to transform a hobby into a profession that allows me to race exotic cars around the world.
What does your workday look like?
On a typical racing weekend, my team and crew completes the final checks and adjustments before we all head off for the racetracks. I typically arrive 2-3 days before the race to start my practice runs. In the next day or so, I compete at the qualifying race, and spend time with our clients and fans for autograph signings and hospitality events….And then, I race!
What’s your favorite post-work destination?
Vancouver, BC
How old were you when you had your first professional race?
I entered my first professional race when I just turned 13. As the youngest driver on the Irwindale Speedway that day, my nerves were getting the best of me but I eventually pulled through and completed my very first professional race. It was such an exhilarating experience that it was the day I had officially caught the racing bug!
