Oct 17, 2018 My Hero Academia: Two Heroes Smashes Box Office Records
Popular shounen anime My Hero Academia’s Two Heroes film recently finished its one-week run in American theaters, and despite the limited release, the film has become one of the top 10 highest-grossing anime films of all time. The film is based on the manga and anime show My Hero Academia and takes place in between the second and third seasons of the series, although the film could still be watched without prior context and still be enjoyable.
The film’s protagonist, Izuku Midoriya (also known as “Deku”), goes on a summer trip with pro hero All Might to “I-Island” to surprise an old friend and attend an expo showcasing top scientific research regarding “quirks,” which are superpowers that 80 percent of the population has. While on this trip, villains take over the island, rendering all pro heroes, even All Might, useless to save the island. It is up to Deku and his classmates on the island to save everyone.
As a huge fan of the anime series as it is, the film did not disappoint. The action scenes alone were enough to render the film a success, but the storytelling also provided a nice layer of context to the series’ overall story. The My Hero Academia series does a great job at diversifying and showcasing quirks through both villains and heroes, and it’s always so interesting to watch how they play out in action. What makes the film so great is that despite playing a part in a greater storyline, the film provides enough context that even a new viewer can enjoy the film without feeling like they’re missing anything.
The film’s release comes just after the end of the third season, and now begins the long wait until spring 2019 for season four. If you are interested in binging on the anime series, all three seasons can be found on Crunchyroll.
