Sep 04, 2018 Nike Celebrates 30th anniversary with Colin Kaepernick.
Nike is celebrating its 30th anniversary of their iconic slogan, “Just Do It” by placing Colin Kaepernick as the face of their campaign.
Colin Kaepernick, formerly a QB in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, came under scrutiny and controversy for sitting and kneeling during the National Anthem in protest of police brutality and racial injustice. Kaepernick posted a black and white photo of himself on Instagram Monday with the quote, “ Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.”
It’s been revealed that Kaepernick who has been out of the NFL since 2016, has been under contract with Nike since 2011 and will get his own signature line with apparel and shoes worth millions and royalties.
The announcement of Kaepernick’s campaign has also come with its share of controversy. Users on social media have vowed to boycott the Swoosh and some even have uploaded video and pictures of them setting fire to Nike sneakers and cutting the Swoosh out of their apparel. Still there were a large amount of users in support of Nike in taking a stand on social issues and hasn’t been the first time. With athletes like Lebron James and Serena Williams being outspoken on their stance on social and racial injustice, Kaepernick announcing his deal with Nike seems like a natural fit.
