Jan 13, 2016 Old is New Again
The three day event of all things technology, CES happened last week. From what I’ve gathered there were plenty of drones, hoverboards and lots of “internet of all things.” What also appeared was an echo of years gone by. There were numerous record players on exhibition, but the main two that people were checking out were the Sony PS-HX500 and the revived Technics 1200.
Sony PS-HX500
This new Sony record player ups the ante with a USB connection converting your records to high quality audio files to play on your computer. I’m pretty sure grandma’s record player doesn’t have that!
Technics SL-1200GAE Limited Edition
After Panasonic made an announcement that they were discontinuing the most beloved record player, there was a petition created asking them to continue. It has been a long wait, but years later here we are with a new updated 1200 series that will be limited to only 1200 pieces, with a general release version to follow. This version touts a weight nearly double that of the original to prevent unnecessary vibrations. It is very nice to see this back, but it will cost around $4,000.

Kodak Super 8
One surprise to me and many other people was the new Super 8 camera from Kodak. Like the original, this camera films onto analog film, but has been updated to record audio on a separate SD card. It’s said that the film you shoot will be processed, and sent back in both analog and Hi-res digital format, with the cost being bundled up into the film’s price. It’s interesting to see this kind of analog resurgence (but wait until the kids find out there’s no erase button).

*I also stumbled upon this toy that was at this year’s CES. It says it’s the “first of its kind but come on…!
