Aug 15, 2013 Project Drive-In
In 2008 I experienced my very first drive-in movie in good ol’ San Luis Obispo on a road trip back home from Berkeley. I was obviously aware that they had existed (just like aliens do), but never got the chance to experience it so I was pretty amp’d up when I finally did. I can’t even remember what we watched but I vividly remember the experience itself, which was really the most important part. Fresh, cold air; the smell of cut grass, people setting up beds in their truck bed, teenagers sitting on top of their cars, kids running around, a sense of community over watching a movie w/ a bunch of strangers, popcorn served in retro packaging, and the best part of it all? Watching a movie with the stars as the backdrop. Simply amazing.
Why is any of this relevant? Well, the movie industry is in the midst of a transition from film to digital (as they should be), but it comes at a cost to the tune of $80,000 to setup digital projection. Drive-in theaters are by no means cash cows and have no way of covering this cost, so Project Drive-In and Honda have partnered together to give away five digital projectors and to also help raise additional funds/awareness. Do your part and help save this amazing tradition. #SaveTheDriveIn
