Feb 28, 2014 Rainy Days
I’m not sure if it’s this stereotypically un-Californian weather we’re having here today sending me on a sentimental journey, or not, but I thought I’d share some more highlights from our trip to Tokyo late last year, when it rained nearly every day for a week. The main focus of the visit was the Architecture For Dogs exhibition which opened at TOTO Gallery Ma, which I blogged about earlier. In addition to attending the AFD speaker panel, press previews, and opening reception, I also got to visit Kenya Hara’s office at Nippon Design Center, and see the newly revamped Kabuki-za nearby, which was redesigned by AFD contributing architect Kengo Kuma. Another huge highlight was a Sou Fujimoto exhibit at the great gallery/bookshop/publisher GA Gallery. But even better than learning all about the genius of Fujimoto-san through models and video content, was visiting the Musashino Art University on the outskirts of Tokyo, in order to see the library there which he designed. In short, it is stunning. A fascinating spiral design of bookshelves within larger bookshelves, the entire building is essentially an out-sized bookshelf. It’s just lovely being in there – the nicest library I’ve ever spent time in, by far. And the book collection is incredible, as are the decor & facilities. Coincidentally, Kenya Hara, project director for Architecture For Dogs, is also a professor at Musashino Art University.
Another big highlight of that same trip, was a quick visit to Gentaro Soba in the Kasuga neighborhood of Tokyo. Architecture For Dogs contributors Kenya Hara and Torafu Architects were involved in the branding and interior design for this beautiful cafeteria style noodle spot. Perfect stuff for a rainy day! This excellent Japanese eatery will open its first US location in Los Angeles this year so stay tuned for more on that.
