While I was in Hawaii for POW WOW last month, I got to visit a fascinating space in the Kaka’ako neighborhood called R&D. R&D is a bookstore, coffee shop, work space, and micro-cinema/event space run by our friends at Interisland Terminal, an Hawaiian non-profit dedicated to presenting and furthering the arts, design & film. As a result, R&D offers an enriching program of arts-related events, including film-screenings, and opening events for the R&D/ii gallery, next door. I met two of the Interisland Terminal team for a tour of their amazing space, and a delicious lunch at neighborhood mainstay, Hank’s Haute Dogs, right around the corner. Interisland Terminal have created an amazing addition to the local landscape, giving creatives a place to get their caffeine fix, eat a snack, make the most of the free wifi, and peruse the top-notch titles on display in the art/design bookstore. The R&D/ii gallery, which is co-curated by Na Mea Hawai’i, currently features an exhibition by Marques Hanalei Marzan called Lines in Time.
