As a follow-up to the 360º camera post, I thought I’d give you a quick round-up of 360 content at the moment.

With the recent release of the Ricoh Theta, they were seeding the cameras out to Youtubers and having them create and post content. One of my favorite content creators Casey Neistat had one to play around with. But with a quick search for “360 video” on Youtube, you’ll find a number of different videos.

This video was filmed on the crazy rig that is made up of 7 GoPro cameras. Be sure to crank up the quality in order to experience the 4K.

The truth is, 360 content has been around in the form of panoramas and a throw back to QuickTime VR. So what’s the difference this time? the ability to experience it in another way. Welcome the Google Cardboard, a relatively cheap VR goggle that allows the viewer to experience the 360.

Most recently, Google teamed up with Verizon to produce a bunch of free Star Wars branded Google Cardboards for their subscribers. Before that, they released more than a million to New York Times weekend subscribers. But if you haven’t been able to get one, and you still want to experience the 360 with Google Cardboard, they’re selling them on their site (and Amazon has a slew of inspired versions).

So 360 is out there again. Now we’ll have to wait to see if the content catches on or if it gets shelved for the future.

*Side Note: Flickr has recently begun to provide the 360 image experience that can only be experienced with the Samsung Oculus. You can check it out at Flickr VR. Without the Oculus, you can still see the images and maneuver around them like back in the day with QuickTime VR.
