City Walk #5: Shimbashi Station Buildings 1 and 2, Tokyo
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an amateur video that captures the feel of Tokyo as well as this one, and it has everything to do with its simplicity: its eye-level perspective, its ordinary subject matter, its clear, natural sounds. Just past the minute mark, when the camera crosses through the train station, I’m reminded of how invisible individuals can become in a city so crowded (note no one registers the camera) and yet how resolutely they all negotiate the traffic. When the salaryman takes leave with a “Ja, sayona-hahaha,” I want to cry, “Mata ne!“
