Nov 06, 2014 Former Walmart turned Modern Library
When a business needs to shut down their operation the space they occupy typically goes unused for extended periods of time (if not years) before a new tenant takes over the property. Its an unfortunate consequence of business turnover but also an opportunity to do something amazing for someone with the right vision. An old Walmart was shut down in McAllen, Texas, and instead of letting a space the size of nearly three football fields idle away, a developer snatched it up and converted it into one massive public library. Opting for a sleek modern look, the library houses 16 public meeting spaces, 14 public study rooms, 64 computer labs, 10 children’s computer labs, 2 genealogy computer labs, a cafe, a used book store, an auditorium, and self check-out stations.
